Abstract Essay | Terry Whalin: 10 Publishing Myths The Truth About Book Publishing, Author Success & Marketing What if everything you believed about becoming a successful published author was wrong?
What if writing an extraordinary book, securing a traditional publishing contract, and seeing your work displayed in bookstores were still not enough to achieve financial success?
And what if the greatest mistake authors make is believing their publisher will handle everything after the book is written?
Abstract Essay, hosted by Daniel Lucas and presented by Universal Podcast Network, welcomes Terry Whalin, experienced author, publishing industry professional, former literary agent, and acquisitions editor, for a compelling conversation about his book 10 Publishing Myths and the realities of becoming a successful author.
With a publishing career beginning in 1992, Terry has written more than 60 books for traditional publishers across multiple genres, including children's literature, biographies, devotional books, and practical nonfiction.
His extensive experience as an author, acquisitions editor, and literary agent gives him a valuable perspective on how the publishing industry operates and why even experienced writers can struggle to achieve commercial success.
But despite publishing approximately 50 books, Terry experienced a surprising realization that completely changed his approach to writing, publishing, and book promotion.
THE WAKE-UP CALL THAT CHANGED HIS PUBLISHING CAREER
In 2007, Terry attended Mega Book Marketing University in Los Angeles after receiving an invitation from Mark Victor Hansen, co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series.
The event brought together hundreds of writers, publishing professionals, and speakers discussing book marketing and author success.
At the time, Terry had already written approximately 50 books for traditional publishers.
His publishers had provided advances, produced professionally designed books, and distributed them through bookstores.
