The Anunnaki's Forbidden Experiment: Who Really Created Humanity?
Ancient Mesopotamian tablets preserve one of humanity’s oldest and most unsettling origin stories. In the Akkadian Atrahasis epic, lesser gods rebel against exhausting labor. The divine assembly responds with a plan: create human beings to carry the burden instead. The text describes clay, a sacrificed god, and the mixing of divine flesh and blood. A related Sumerian composition, Enki and Ninmah, also connects human creation with relieving divine labor.
For ancient-astronaut writer Zecharia Sitchin, whose 1976 book The 12th Planet brought the Anunnaki to a global audience, these stories were not only religious myths. He argued that the Anunnaki were extraterrestrial visitors, associated with Nibiru, who engineered humanity as a workforce. Later retellings expanded the claim into a story of alien genetic intervention and mineral extraction.
But what do the surviving tablets actually say? This episode follows the named scribe Ku-Aya, the Atrahasis manuscript preserved at the Morgan Library, later cuneiform witnesses, the changing meaning of the term Anunnaki, and the gap between ancient divine language and modern technological interpretation. The tablets are authentic. The ancient stories are real. Whether they preserve memory of a literal intervention from beyond Earth is a separate question—one requiring evidence beyond the words pressed into clay thousands of years ago.
