ADU 1412: Can US Drone Makers Truly Replace DJI? The Reality of American Drone Manufacturing

Xpece Founder Alex Rodriguez on Supply Chain Bottlenecks, Red Tape, and Building Waterproof Drones

In this episode of the Ask Drone U podcast, host Paul Aitken sits down with Alex Rodriguez, founder and CEO of Xpece Drones and Urban Drones. Alex shares his journey from building FPV drones in 2011 and burning down his house to designing the first mass-production waterproof drone on Kickstarter.

They explore the state of the US drone manufacturing ecosystem amidst FCC restrictions and bans targeting foreign manufacturers like DJI. Alex breaks down the massive contrast between Chinese and American prototyping speeds, the danger of American manufacturers completely abandoning the consumer drone market, and the regulatory gridlock (FCC, FAA, Remote ID, and NDAA compliance) stifling domestic innovation.

Alex also explains how Xpece developed an IP67 waterproof drone capable of floating on water, landing in waves, equalizing barometric pressure, and dropping fishing bait up to 1,000 feet offshore—all without requiring an external mobile device or app.
