Shakespeare’s Lost Literary Mystery Solved? New Study Names Him the Main Author of Edward III18. Okt.2 Min.

A new study has brought fresh attention to Edward III, an anonymously published history play long associated with William Shakespeare. Researchers now argue that Shakespeare was its principal author, with fellow Elizabethan dramatist Christopher Marlowe contributing substantial portions of the work. <Cite refs={["turn281092news6"]}/>

🔍 What did the researchers discover? The research was conducted by Dr Rory Loughnane of the University of Kent and Professor Brett Greatley-Hirsch of the University of Leeds.

Using computerised linguistic analysis, the scholars examined the play’s language and compared it with works attributed to ten dramatists active during the late 16th century.

Their analysis identified 23 sections associated with Shakespeare and nine associated with Marlowe. The researchers argue that the findings provide compelling evidence of collaboration between the two playwrights. <Cite refs={["turn281092news6"]}/>

✍️ Why does this matter?Edward III was published anonymously in 1596 and was not included in the 1623 First Folio, the first collected edition of Shakespeare’s plays.

Scholars have long accepted that Shakespeare likely contributed to parts of the play, but the newly reported research makes a stronger case for his role as the main author and identifies Marlowe as a collaborator.

The findings could also reshape how researchers understand the professional relationship between two of the most influential dramatists of the Elizabethan era.

The researchers’ study is scheduled for publication in Shakespeare Quarterly. Until the full research is available for scrutiny, the conclusions should be understood as the scholars’ findings rather than an uncontested historical fact. <Cite refs={["turn281092news6","turn281092search3"]}/>
