Jeanine Pirro, the top federal prosecutor in Washington, says every American with a retirement account is "in the blast radius," and Matt starts by walking through the con she's chasing. It begins with a friendly wrong-number text, turns into weeks of chatting, and ends on a fake brokerage site that even lets you pull money out so you'll trust it. Then come the fake "taxes" to release your balance, and finally the fake law firms and fake FBI agents offering to get your money back for a fee. Pirro says the Telegram marketplace selling these fake sites has more than 650,000 users, and the FBI has warned more than 8,100 victims, most of whom didn't know they'd been taken. Matt gives three checks before you ever send a dollar (the person, who receives the transfer, and any demand for a fee) and exactly what to do if you've already wired money. Then he turns to November 4th, the morning after the midterms, and the new lawmakers who want to rewrite your property rights: a rent freeze in New York City, rent and eviction limits spreading through California, Oregon, Washington, New York, and New Jersey, a "tax the rich" letter that landed at nearly 6,000 people's primary homes, and a Democratic Socialists of America platform that calls for replacing the private housing market. He closes with the federal one that touches every homeowner: the tax break on selling your home hasn't been raised since 1997, and the simple steps to check your exemption and run your numbers before anyone else does.
