标题:China is turning trash into treasure on a vast scale

EV batteries, especially, will help it secure supplies of critical minerals

正文:A fast-growing number of EVs will soon be scrapped and replaced. Shredding their batteries yields “black mass”, a powder from which valuable metals such as lithium, cobalt and nickel can be recovered and reused. From next month the EU will make it harder to export this waste. The aim is to encourage more processing of black mass close to home (at the moment most is shipped to Asia). In August America, which has banned Chinese EVs but still imports lots of Chinese batteries, blocked all black-mass exports.

知识点:【scrap】 /skræp/ v./n.

英文释义:To scrap something means to get rid of it because it is no longer useful; as a noun, it is waste material, especially metal, that can be reused.

本义:源自古诺斯语skrap(碎片、碎屑)——一堆碎料。

本文特指:第一段用动词,a fast-growing number of EVs will soon be scrapped

(报废);第九段用名词/形容词,scrap copper and aluminium(废铜废铝)。同一个词,一处是动作,一处是物件;scrap a plan(废掉一个计划)是它的抽象引申。

核心搭配:scrap metal(废金属)、scrap value(残值)、scrap a plan/car(废弃计划/车)、a scrap of paper(一小片纸)
