Iain Davis: “The Technocratic Dark State” | Tom Nelson Pod #437

Iain Davis discusses his book The Technocratic Dark State, arguing Silicon Valley oligarchs (e.g., Thiel, Musk, Andreessen, Altman, Ellison) steer policy toward a tokenized “everything” economy, including natural assets, carbon markets, and a vastly expanded paper valuation. He says climate narratives may be rebranded across political demographics to sell the same goal: technocratic digital control via programmable money, digital identity, AI-driven surveillance, and BIS-led cross-border “interoperable” payment standards. Davis warns censorship will shift from speech to “reach,” citing the UK Online Safety Act and arrests for online comments, and describes “everything apps,” biometrics-based payments, and geo-fenced spending as tools for automated compliance and fines. He contends surveillance is already pervasive through devices and apps, and says adoption is ultimately a public choice.

00:00 Meet Iain Davis

00:11 Silicon Valley and Trump

03:10 Tokenizing Everything

05:18 Carbon Markets and Nature

08:39 Climate Narrative Rebrand

10:51 Digital Control Pitch

12:51 Free Speech and Shadowbans

16:04 Online Safety and Censorship

20:31 X as Everything App

23:05 Crisis Pressure and Control

28:04 Debt and Tokenized Assets

32:03 Stablecoins and New Rails

33:49 Programmable Money Interop

35:51 BIS Controls Standards

37:49 Bitcoin as Reserve Asset

41:13 Programmable Money Fears

42:12 AI Data Lake Control

46:31 Robots and Adoption Incentives

50:54 Mass Surveillance Reality

56:05 Face Pay and Auto Fines

58:45 Digital ID Skepticism

01:02:07 Agentic State Explained

01:06:15 Wrap Up and Choice

https://iaindavis.com/

https://www.ukcolumn.org/writer/iain-davis

https://x.com/_InThisTogether

=========

Slides, summaries, references, and transcripts of my podcasts: https://tomn.substack.com/p/podcast-summaries

My Linktree: https://linktr.ee/tomanelson1
